About Peace Education Course
The Peace Education material which is being used by the African Centre for Peace Building to organize its professional Peace Education Programme is an idea that emerged in central Nigeria where, in January and March 2010, the Africa Regional Coordinator of Teachers Without, Dr. Raphael Ogar Oko witnessed the devastating impact of sectarian violence on the people of and communities if his native country. Upon consultation with local partners, including the National Human Rights Commission of Nigeria, Dr. Ogar Oko lead a team to commenced work on a teacher professional development programme that assists teachers in becoming peace-builders in their classrooms, schools, and communities, and provide tools and approaches that help educate their students to become peace-builders who apply the lessons of tolerance and conflict resolution learned in the classroom in their communities.
The African Centre for Peace Building fall on this course material as a useful tool to achieving its objective a result of some of the challenges encountered by AFCOPB Volunteers on the Rural Peace Project (May 20-August 2010) where many of the volunteers posted to schools in conflict affected areas were unable to answer some critical on-the-ground questions pose to them by their pupils.
This, the AFCOPB noticed was lack of peace education skills at the part of the Volunteer Teachers on the project hence commenced work on how best its Volunteers can be resourced with enough peace education knowledge. It was during this period that AFCOPB found this material developed by Teachers Without Borders.
In Ghana, AFCOPB have been endorsed by the Ghana Education Services through the Ministry of Education to train Teachers in a Peace Education and engage them in achieving the peace education agenda in Ghana.
In July 30-31, 2011, AFCOPB organized its first Professional Peace Education Programme at the Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana-Accra sponsored by Global Educators for All Initiative-Nigeria and that drew 80 participants from Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Cameroon, and UK.
The training course was administered by Dr. Raphael Ogar Oko (TWB Peace Education initiator) and Mr. Aminu Dramani-Lecturer, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology-Kumais, Ghana
